When your only daughter announces that she’s getting married, as someone who sews you put yourself on standby just in case you are asked to make anything for the wedding.
My daughter had found her perfect dress but was struggling to find bridesmaids dresses in the colour she wanted. We also found that the multiway dresses that are popular for bridesmaids were made up of a handful of seams that I could have sewn with one hand tied behind my back!
Beth eventually found her bridesmaid's fabric and we bought 35 metres of it from Tia Knight Fabrics www.tiaknightfabrics.co.uk it was a beautiful silk touch 4 way stretch lycra in a colour they called terracotta but in reality it was more like an Cinnamon Pink. Very unusual but also a beautiful colour.
We got hold of a few multiway dresses to copy and I made a prototype for the bridesmaid to try on before I cut them all out.
In the meantime the Groom Max was tasked with finding ties and buttonholes to match the bridesmaid dress colour and after ordering many many samples it was clear we weren't going to find anything that matched or coordinated with the dresses.
So in a moment of madness I offered to learn how to make ties and pocket squares for the seven groomsmen!
Luckily Max let me unpick one of his old ties and I found dimensions for pocket squares online however the lycra I was making them from was far too flimsy so everything had to be interfaced. The ties also needed a tie interlining which I bought from Ebay.
The ties turned out perfectly however the pocket squares were very bulky with the interfacing I'd added, so I modified them to a faux pocket square with the correct folds showing and a stand that slid into the pocket that made it nice and flat.
When the bridal party were sorted I turned my attention to my own dress and helping my sister with their outfits.
For my own dress which I will cover in another blog I'd refreshed my knowledge of pattern drafting and made toiles for myself and for anyone who would let me so I drafted, cut and helped my Mum and Sister complete their outfits for the big day.
